Boulder Parking Lot Marked Ahead of EV Charging Design

The job. A civil engineering firm was preparing a survey for an EV charging installation in a commercial parking lot in Boulder. Before their crew could shoot the site, they needed the underground utilities under the parking areas and drive aisles marked, and they needed it quickly.

What we did. We walked the parking areas and driveways first, looking for the structures: vaults, pull boxes, valve cans, light bases. Where a structure gave us access we put the electromagnetic locator on direct connect and traced the run. Then we swept the drive aisles with ground-penetrating radar for anything that would not carry a signal. Everything went down in APWA color code at the approximate horizontal location, with no depth, and the survey crew shot the marks along with the rest of the site.

The record. A written record of what was searched, what was traced and how, and what was marked went to the engineer the same week, so the drawing carries the method as well as the lines.

The timeline. The firm asked for a fast turnaround. The quote went out, was approved and the deposit paid, the lot was marked the following day, and the record followed. The engineer's reply was a thank-you for the speed.
